Prepare Your Smile for Implants
If Dr. Sullivan determines that you suffer from jawbone deterioration or gum infection, he’ll recommend that you undergo one or more supplemental procedures to prepare you for dental implants. We offer three supplemental procedures in our office for your convenience.
Because they fuse directly with your jaw, dental implants require plenty of jawbone mass for support. However, patients who live with tooth loss for a long time or wear removable dentures often suffer from jawbone deterioration and lack the strength to support implants.
Thankfully, Dr. Sullivan can make you an implant candidate by performing a bone graft. Bone grafting is a common surgical procedure that’s used to restore your jawbone to full strength. The process involves taking healthy bone tissue from another part of your body, or from a donor, and grafting it to the deficient areas of your jawbone.
After a short healing period, the new tissue will absorb into your jaw and provide the dense, healthy bone that you need to support dental implants.
If you don’t have enough bone height in your upper jaw or if your sinuses are too close to your jaw, this can prevent Dr. Sullivan from placing dental implants. Missing back teeth or molars can also leave you without enough healthy bone tissue to support implants.
If this is the case, a sinus augmentation will add bone to your upper jaw and between your maxillary sinuses. To create space for this new bone tissue, Dr. Sullivan will lift your sinus membrane, allowing him to place your implants after your mouth has healed.
If you suffer from gum disease or you’ve worn removable dentures for a long time, your upper or lower jaw can develop indentations where your missing teeth once were. These indentations can leave you with insufficient bone mass for the implant procedure.
Thankfully, Dr. Sullivan can perform a ridge modification to lift your gums and graft healthy bone tissue onto the impacted areas of your jaw. This new tissue will rebuild your jaw ridge and prepare you for implant placement.
